Your Standley Lake Gator Varsity Basketball team was invited to the State Class 4A Tournament and took on the Sand Creek Scorpions away on February 26, 2016.

The team got a terrific send off from their fellow schoolmates before the 2 hour bus ride down.

The Scorpions came into the contest with the #1 seed and their school record 66.5 point/game average. The Gators came into the game with a can do attitude understanding the challenges of the matchup.

The early start provided difficulty for the Gator faithful to get there before the start of the game.

The Gators started off with a three point play by Hayley Davis. Sand Creek got their first basket off a turnover and followed with a three, a bucket, a free throw, and a hoop before Hanna Davis stopped the run with a  basket. After a pair of free throws, Savannah Martin hit a free throw. The Scorpions followed with a layup. Camille Garcia knocked down a left handed layup to make it 8-14. Sand Creek got a basket and a pair of free throws. Karah Burkel hit a hoop to end the 1st 10-18. In the 2nd, Jackie Paik got a basket to start. Camille Garcia (4 pts, reb) converted a Savannah Martin pass for a bucket to close it to 14-18. The Scorpions got a hoop, and Hayley Davis responded with one of her own (assist by Paik). Sand Creek got a three point play. Then Jackie Paik hit a jumper. The Scorpions got a basket.

Then Hayley Davis hit a trey (assist by Tara Atwood (asst)) and was fouled after the shot but before Sand Creek got the possession sending her to the line. She knocked down both free throws to get a quasi-five point play to rev up the Gator faithful and close the gap to 23-25! Suddenly the Scorpions shot seemed to go on autopilot and they got 4 straight buckets to end the half 23-33. In the 3rd, Savannah Martin (assist by Paik) opened with a three. Sand Creek followed with a hoop. Jackie Paik converted a Savannah Martin pass for a hoop to make it 28-35. The Scorpions got a basket, and Hanna Davis (6 pts, 4 reb, steal) was fouled and hit a free throw. Sand Creek capitalized on a turnover and got the lead back to 10. Hayley Davis was fouled hard but hit both her free throws. Savannah Martin got a great steal and converted the layup to get the score to 33-39. Then the Scorpions got a trio of baskets. Hanna Davis was fouled hard but hit both of her free throws making it 36-45. Sand Creek followed with a pair of buckets. Again Hayley Davis was fouled hard but hit both of her free throws getting it to 38-49. Once again, the Scorpions got a trio of hoops to end the 3rd 38-55. In the 4th, Karah Burkel got a nifty basket to start. After a Sand Creek three, Burkel (5 pts, 5 reb, steal) was fouled again and hit a free throw. The Scorpions followed with a nice drive and layup, another layup after a turnover, a bucket, a free throw, and another layup off a turnover to make it 41-67. Hayley Davis stopped the 9 point run with a hoop (assist by Paik). Sand Creek drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws. Jackie Paik (7 pts, 3 asst, 2 reb, steal) drew a foul and hit a free throw. After another Scorpion basket, Savannah Martin got a bucket, Emma Shileny (1 pt) was fouled and hit a free throw, Hayley Davis (18 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals) was fouled and hit her free throws, and Jamie Torbet (2 pts) got a hoop (assist by Martin (8 pts, 3 asst, 7 reb, 4 steals)) to make it 51-71.  Sand Creek drew a late foul and hit a free throw to end it 51-72. In the effort, the Gators went 16-45 (36%) from the field and 17-23 (74%) from the line. The Scorpions went 30-69 (43%) from the field and 10-16 (63%) from the line. Of note, Hayley Davis went 9-9 from the line. The Gators valiant efforts during the season resulted in a 14-10, 8-7 record for the season.

Your Standley Lake Gator JV and Varsity team took on the Golden Demons on 2/12/16 in the Swamp. It was the parent  and senior appreciation night as well. Golden HS does not carry a Level III team.

In the JV game, the Demons started off with a pair of baskets. Jennifer Holguin converted a Haley Rountree pass for a three and another Rountree dish for a bucket to get the Gators a lead 5-4. Golden drew a foul and hit their free throws. Holguin ("Texas") regained the lead for the Gators with a trey off a steal. The Demons tied it with a hoop  to end the 1st. In the 2nd, Golden drew another foul. With the Gators' aggressive defense, the Demons were in the bonus and hit both 1-1 free throws. Again, they drew a foul and converted another pair of free throws. Adding on, they hit another basket before Nikki Silva (2 pts, 2 reb, 2 steals) stopped the run with a bucket (assist by Kaitlyn Maldonado (asst, 2 reb)). With 0:36 left, Golden drew another foul and hit a double bonus free throw to make it 10-15 at half time. In the 3rd, the Demons struck first with a hoop. Then, the Gators ramped it up getting a free throw from Halie Blincoe, three from Lina Vogler (assist by Haley Rountree (3 asst, 4 reb), another three by Vogler to tie it, a pair of free throws by Vogler, and a putback by Vogler to make it 21-17. Apparently the Golden coach was incensed and drew a technical foul. Jazmyn Ruybal (1 pt, 3 reb, 4 steals) sank a free throw to end the scoring in the 3rd 22-17. Sensing an advantage, the Gators kept up the energy getting another three from Jennifer Holguin (assist by Kelsey Clements). After a Demon three, the Gators got a trey by Lina Vogler (assist by Clements (2 asst, 5 reb, 2 steals)) and a basket by Vogler (assist by Jennifer Holguin (11 pts, asst, 5 reb, 3 steals)). Golden drew a foul and hit a free throw. Lina Vogler responded with a three to cause the Gator faithful to erupt in appreciation. The Demons drew  another foul and hit a free throw. Then Vogler (20 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals) stole the ball and hit a layup. Halie Blincoe (2 pts, asst, reb, steal) drew a foul and hit a double bonus free throw, making it 4-on-5 the rest of the way, since Golden only suited 5 players for the game. Easing up perhaps, the Gators allowed a three and a layup, and a double bonus free throw to end it 36-28. In the effort, the Gators were 12-63 (19%) from the field and 5-12 (42%) from the line. The Demons shot 8-30 (27%) from the field and 10-22 (45%) from the line. The Gators' record improves to 2-13, 2-9. This was probably the Gators most complete game of the year.
