Last night your Standley Lake Volleyball teams took on the Wheat Ridge HS Farmers in the Swamp on 9/27/16 with an excellent and supportive Gator crowd in attendance. Here is a synopsis:
The Freshmen played first on the whole court. They played scrappy with good coverage but the scores lagged as it was 3-8 early, but they rapplied back to 9-10. The Farmers surged back to 11-16, but the Gators got a 7 point run with Maria Tersigni serving up 3 aces in a row.
(Maria Tersigni gets an ace.)
The game see-sawed, but service errors and a pair of Farmer aces ended it 24-26. In the 2nd game, the Gators came out focused and took a 6-0 lead with Syndey Schmelzer serving a pair of aces. An ace by Evie Brackney got it to 11-13, and the Gators maintained their lead to take the 2nd set 25-19. In the 3rd set, the Gators' resolve was evident as they took 3-0, 5-1, 8-2, and 11-5 leads highlighted by Syndey Schmelzer aces and a Ravan Hammack kill. Maria Tersigni closed it out with a block kill to end it 15-6. They improve their record to 6-2.
The Level III team had a bye, since Wheat Ridge did not have a Freshmen team and their Level III team played our Freshmen.
In the JV match, the Gators the came out strong and played their game taking the lead 13-4 with Colleen Gill serving an 8 point run. Wheat Ridge's service errors sealed the deal as the Gators took the 1st set 25-16. Oddly, in the 2nd set, the Gator energy seemed to wane as they fell behind 3-10, but they rallied with a 6 point run to retake the lead 13-12 with Jamie Zimmerman serving. The Farmers battle back to take retake the lead 15-19 and held on to take the 2nd set 18-25. In the 3rd set, the Gators energy seemed to be lower and 2 service errors and a net call resulted in a 3-6 deficit. Another service error made it 10-14 and it ended 10-15. The Gators' record drops to 1-5.
In the Varsity match, the Gators surged to a 7-2 lead with Sadie Heffelman serving. Kills by Elizabeth Dill, Amanda Bosben, Lauren Willihnganz, and Shelby Hines got the lead up to 12-4. Zoe Ryan-Terra's dump kill ended the 1st set 25-9.
(Amanda Bosben gets a dump kill.)
In the 2nd set, the scores see-sawed to 6-5 as the Wheat Ridge crowd's boisterous support rallied their team despite kills by Hayley and Hanna Davis. A Gator surge with a good rally led to a 12-7 score at which time the Gators got a yellow card for a substitution behind the 10 foot line. As a result, the refs realized retrospectively a rotation error, and the scoreboard showed an initial removal of points off the board, but Coach Dolly Kiessling pled her case successfully, and the Gators regained their points and the Farmers only got the sideout after a curiously long delay. The Gators kept up their energy and focus as Zoe Ryan-Terra got a kill, Sadie Heffelman got an ace, and Kayla Pray came up with a terrific dig to get the score to 17-8. Sam Montoya notched a pair of great kills, and Amanda Bosben sealed with win with a pair of kills to take the 2nd set 25-13. In the 3rd set, the supportive Gator faithful helped keep their team's energy and focus up as they cheered them on to a 6-0 start again with kills by Amanda Bosben and Zoe Ryan-Terra. Hanna Davis got a great block and 4 kills to get the score to 14-5.A great rally including 3 blocks, 2 by Hanna Davis and one by Amanda Bosben and then an ace by Sadie Heffelman made 24-10, and the Gators prevailed 25-10 to take the match.
(The Gators and their fans celebrate in the Swamp.)
They improve record to 6-4.
