Your Standley Laker Gator Men's Soccer team entered the 1st round of the State Class 4A Soccer tournament as the 14th seed on Wed. Oct. 26 with a record of 9-4-2 after tying D'Evelyn 1-1 in the final game of the regular season on Oct. 18. That gave D'Evelyn the conference title. Coach Mike Day said, "that was a ton of fun to be part of. It was a great battle, and I enjoyed being part of it. All the boys found hard." Unfortunately the Gators would be without starting goalie Simon Van Den Abbeele due to injury.
The 1st game of the playoffs at the NAAC against Pueblo Central (11-4, 4-1) was scoreless in the 1st half. In the 2nd half at the 52nd minute, senior Hunter Rouse eluded a Pueblo defender and scored the lone goal of the match eluding freshman goalie Jess Chavez. The "goal seemed like it took a lot longer than it actually did to go in," said Rouse. "I'm very happy it went in." Pueblo came close to tying it in the 55th minute with a short that crossed teh goal mouth from a difficult angle. Sophomore Erik Macias came close to making it 2-0 in the 71st minute with a shot just wide.
Next up is the 3rd seed The Classical Academy (14-2) on Nov. 1. Last year, they ended the Gators' run in the Class 4A State semi-finals. "I'm pretty excited about the opportunity to go down there," Coach Day said. "This is a pretty young team, and we're playing with house money."
